Once the trim carpenter has installed the skirt and stair caps, the stair parts (sub specific) may then be installed. The spindles, railing, starter step and volutes are supplied and installed by the vendor.

The stair parts should be installed per city building code and specifications.

Checklist

  • 4 1/2″ Maximum Handrail Projection (wall to outside of handrail)
  • Minimum 36″ width clear from stair wall to stair wall (wide)
  • 27″ minimum from stair handrail to stair handrail (when using two handrails)
  • Minimum 31 1/2″ stair handrail to wall (when using one handrail)
  • Minimum 6′ 8″ headroom (from top of stair tread to above header)
  • Minimum 10″ stair tread depth
  • Maximum 7 3/4″ stair riser height
  • Maximum 3/8″ variance in stair tread depth
  • Maximum 3/8″ variance in stair riser height
  • Slope of riser may not exceed 30 degrees
  • Stair tread overhang minimum 3/4″
  • Stair tread overhang maximum 1 1/4″
  • Nosing projection may not vary more than 3/8″
  • Handrail must be continuous unless interupted by a newel
  • Minimum handrail clearance of 1 1/2″
  • Circular handrail diameters must be between 1 1/4″ and 2″
  • Spindles installed per code.
  • Correct style of stair parts.
  • Hand rail smooth at transitions.
  • Railing secure to floor.
  • Trash in designated area and work areas swept out
