Installing Roof Sheathing

During the construction of your home, it will come time for installing roof sheathing after the band has been run. During the installation of roof sheathing, the contractor will be responsible for supplying his own nails, staples, and clips that are required for the roof sheathing installation. Before you order and begin installing roof sheathing, you need to make sure you understand your options and the energy efficiency options that are available to you. Make sure that if you are interested in getting the most energy efficiency possible that you install the appropriate tech-shield sheathing to gain efficiency in energy savings.

Checklist for Installing Roof Sheathing

• When installing roof sheathing, make sure the decking is nailed 6″ on center at joints and 12″ on center in the field.
• Make sure that the clips on the rafters are installed every 24″ on center, and centered between rafters.
• Also while installing roof sheathing you should also install fireplace openings and cricket decking.
• Confirm that the appropriate holes have been cut in the roof sheathing for all air vents.
• Make sure the roof sheathing contractor has piled up all trash and scrap material in an appropriate place.
• Also confirm while installing roof sheathing that if wafer-board decking is being used, the roof sheathing should be spaced 1/8″ at all joints to allow for OSB to expand and contract in various moisture and temperature conditions. Failure to conform to proper spacing will result in excessive telegraphing of roof decking through shingles.
