Concrete Flatwork

concrete flatwork construction

Typically flatwork is placed after the slab forms have been removed and the tractor work has been completed. When you build your own home, you are going to want to work out the concrete flatwork material situations with the suppliers prior to starting the work. In this situation, it is typical that you will be responsible for supplying the re-bar, mesh, expansion joint materials, and the concrete for the work to be performed. All though you can also arrange that the flatwork concrete contractor be responsible for this material as well, but this will usually cost more. The flatwork concrete contractor will provide the rest. The concrete flatwork contractor sets forms, installs expansive joint materials with stakes, grades the area with sand to allow for 4″ of concrete, installs the wire mesh and re-bar, and cuts and breaks out the curb where the concrete flatwork meets the street (if necessary). After you have received your city inspection, the concrete flatwork contractor pours the concrete, and then removes all forms from the lot at completion.

It is important to always be aware of the forecasted weather conditions for the day of the flatwork pour. If it is forecasted to be cold, ensure that it is 40 degrees and rising by 11:00 a.m. before you pour concrete (you don’t want it to freeze). If temperatures are forecasted to go below freezing the night after pouring the concrete flatwork, cover it to ensure proper curing. If temperatures are forecasted to go above 90 degrees; flatwork concrete pours should start as early as possible and do not start pours after 11:00 AM.

Concrete Flatwork Note: Drainage should be determined before setting concrete flatwork so it will not cause any problems later on.
